Centre-left has chosen Sala as the candidate for mayor of Milan
[ Italica ] On Saturday February 6 and Sunday February 7 fewer than 61,000 voters chose the candidate for mayor of the city of Milan for the centre-left coalition. Giuseppe Sala was elected with 42,3% of votes, while the current vice-Mayor, Francesca Balzani, earned 34%. The other two candidates were Pierfrancesco Majorino (23%) and Antonio Iannetta (0,7%). Giuseppe Sala had had the support of the Italian Prime Minister and leader of the Democratic Party Matteo Renzi. Disappointment arose on the left side of the coalition, since Balzani and Majorino, running separately despite political closeness, wasted a chance to overcome Sala. By combining their votes, the left candidates would have received a total of 57%. The official elections for the city will be held next May.
